kitchen cabinets.

Our kitchen needed a face lift to say the least. So one of the first things we did when we moved in was to paint the cabinets. Let me preface this post by saying this was most definitely annoying but 100% worth it. Before we painted them, the cabinets were a dark oak circa 1985 (which is when our house was built, so expected). We didn't want to tackle any major renos right away and the cabinets themselves were in good shape, so painting them seemed to be the solution. Now I did a lot and I mean A LOT of pinteresting and researching online to find the best way to go about this DIY project. I came across this post on Pinterest: how-to-paint-your-kitchen-cabinets and pretty much followed the guidelines to a tee. I chose Benjamin Moore ADVANCE paint in White Dove. I did buy an inexpensive paint sprayer on Amazon, but I guess you get what you pay for because it was garbage. So we ended up painting the cabinets by hand, which ended up being no big deal. First we sanded the cabinets and drawers, wiped them clean, primed, painted and then painted again. I purchased new hardware (which I am in love with) and new hinges. I wanted the European hinges (the kind that you can't see from the outside) and found a great deal on Amazon. The only problem is I bought the wrong size (whoops!) and the correct size was going to cost twice as much. Enter my genius father-in-law and husband who figured out that by adding a thin strip of wood to the inside of the cabinet would make the hinges fit! Life Savers!! So after a few bumps along the way and a lot of paint-ruined sweat pants our cabinets were done! The entire project took about 3 weeks to complete because we were working mostly weekends when Mikey was home to help. The total cost was about $200 which includes the paint, hardware and all the materials. Not too shabby! We did purchase a new stove and microwave and paint over those lovely yellow walls with Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter....so much better!!  Next up to change/hide the hideous tile back splash!
